Leading a healthy life

If you knew me personally, you would laugh at me for the topic I chose. Because personally, when it comes to health, I was very heedless person. Eating junk food was a regular (sometimes daily) thing and exercise was a far away stuff.

Then, one day, we (me and my wife) heard about a marathon in our town and decided to give it a try. There were three slots of run i.e. 21 km, 12 km and 6 km. Naturally, we registered for the shortest course, i.e. 6 km.

Although we had registered for the shortest course, it was difficult to run 6 km on the day of event without any practice. We still had one month remaining. And we planned to run a short distance on day one and aimed to increase the distance day by day.

Needless to say, on day 1, we couldn't even sprint for five minutes continuously. Day 2 and day 3 passed with the same result. On day 4, we could be able to run a little more. And it took us almost 12 to 15 days to achieve the 6 km milestone. We still needed to practice more to cover the same distance in less time.

But in these 12 days, I noticed one change in my daily routine. Previously, I used to get tired easily and ran out of stamina even after small walk or little physical work. But now I felt energetic throughout the day. I also been able to work more efficiently. This was a good sign. So I decided to continue the workout. Besides walking and running, I started some other techniques to become fit. From researching internet and consulting my family doctor, I came to know that one doesn't need to go to gym or hire a professional to lead a healthy life. Here are some common techniques to maintain a healthy body without paying for the gym.

Here, I would like to tell you that maintaining a better health is not a one day job. It will take some time and you have to slog the following procedure on regular basis. Also you have to concentrate on it throughout the day. Not just morning or evening.

Note: Every human body is not similar and there can be different requirement for your physique. Kindly consult your doctor before applying any of the following activity.

Walk or jog

The best and very basic exercise. No matter you do it in morning or evening, it has lots of benefits. It strengthens your bones and muscles. It helps you to maintain weight, improves cardio health, improves digestion and lot more. All you need is a compatible shoes and a bottle of water. Start with short distance and gradually increase the distance day by day, until you reach your milestone. Then work on your pace. Remember, don't forget to smile at other walker or jogger.

Do not over exaggerate yourself. It will only harm you. Know your limit.

Planks

"If you think one minute is a short period of time, try doing plank for a minute." When I read this sentence somewhere, I decided to give it a try. And to my surprise, I couldn't hold the position for 20 seconds. Here's how to do it.

- Get into pushup position.
- Bend Elbows 90 degrees and rest your weight on forearms.
- Keep your torso straight and your body in a straight line from head to toe (This is important).
- Hold the position as long as you can. Remember to inhale and exhale slowly.

Planks improves your overall metabolism. It helps to reduce back pain and reduce the risk of back and spinal injury. You will feel improvement in your posture and you will become more flexible than before.

Drink a lot of water

At least 8 to 10 glasses or 2 to 2.5 litres (in hot summer, 12 to 15 glasses) a day. Your body has 70% of water in it. So, it's obvious you need constant supply of water for your body to work properly. Intake optimum water regularly and it will improve your energy level. It flushes out the body wastes by means of sweat and urination, reducing the threat of kidney stones. Helps to improve skin complexion and make your hair glossy and shiny. Prevents headache. And it also helps to lose weight.

Don't consume soda or other soft drinks instead of your water intake. It offers no nutrition and may contain high amount of sugar and harmful chemicals.

Eat healthy food

As I stated earlier, leading a healthy life is not a work of specific time of the day. You have to concentrate on it throughout the day. And eating right is mandatory. Eat three times a day. And follow a healthy diet which includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains and appropriate amount of fat and dairy products. It can help you maintaining a steady weight. It also reduces the risk of heart disease by maintaining blood pressure and cholesterol level. And your bones and teeth will become stronger.

For better outcome, avoid sugar, excess salt and items which have bad cholesterol like oil and cheese.

Sleep well

Sleeping is a vital activity. But sometimes we don't consider importance of it. Of course, it makes us feel fresh and energetic, but it is way more beneficial than that. Sleeping reduces stress and by getting enough sleep, you can pay proper attention on your work next day. It improves your mood and work efficiency.

Tip: Kill two birds with one stone. Go for a walk before sleep and you will get proper sleep throughout the night. This way, you will get dual benefit of walk as well as sleep. Also, if possible, take a quick nap of 10 to 20 minutes after lunch to re-energise yourself.

However, sleeping is important, it is not recommended to exceed sleep hours. For a normal person, 7 to 8 hours sleep is enough. And it is also essential to wake up early in the morning to stay fresh throughout the day. So refrain from that snooze button.

Relax

Relax doesn't mean sit back and stretch your legs. It means to get out of your hectic work life once in a while. Disconnect from your gadgets. Socialize. Go out with your friends or family. Go on a vacation. Do meditation. It will make you happy and A HAPPY LIFE IS A HEALTHY LIFE.

    1. You don't have time for health because you are too busy in you work is like you don't have time to fill the fuel tank because you are too busy in driving. Remember, eventually it will catch it up. Sooner is better.
